Local Artist Selected for St. Cloud Mural Project

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – After a three-month vetting process, the City of St. Cloud, Minn., has selected Minneapolis scenic artist Lili Payne to design, fabricate and install an outdoor permanent art piece along the walls of the buildings facing the Downtown Metro Transit Center (MTC) Station in St. Cloud. The installed artwork will serve as a focal point of 5th Avenue and be highly visible to motorists, pedestrians and MTC riders.

Payne was chosen because her concept best reflected the character of St. Cloud. She has proposed a series of wall-sized artworks painted in the style of 1930s WPA posters that will promote the social initiative “explore your local parks.” Parks featured will be determined with the help of St. Cloud mayor Dave Kleis.

Payne was selected from three finalists and one alternate of a total of 12 submissions received by the St. Cloud Arts Commission. Work on the project will begin in April 2013 with installation completed by May 2013.

Lili Payne is a Minneapolis scenic artist who specializes in commercial, theatrical and residential painting. Since opening her own business (Gilded Lili) in 2003, she has executed projects for the Guthrie Theatre, Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, the Children’s Theatre, Macy’s Special Events, Gustavus Adolphus College and St. Francis Healthcare. She currently resides in Minneapolis’ Lake Nokomis neighborhood.
